Buddhism teaches the path to happiness in every-day life and how to plant the seeds of future happiness by developing compassion and wisdom. It gives us the mental training that helps us eliminate our negative minds and develop peaceful and harmonious mental states, for our own benefit and that of all sentient beings.

When Buddha attained Enlightenment, his aim was not to enjoy everlasting happiness: he was driven by the desire that all sentient beings may also attain that same happiness, which he attained by the practice of the precious Bodhicitta, the mind of great compassion. Knowing that all sentient beings are equal to him, holding them even more important than himself, he practiced the positive mindstates with this motivation until he attained Buddhahood, supreme Enlightenment. He made a commitment to help all living beings to free themselves from suffering, so that all beings may reach the enlightened state just as he did.
